Several students in Kisumu have been rendered homeless after a fire razed down their houses on Wednesday.

The fire outbreak, suspected to have been caused by a gas explosion at the Nubian estate in Kaloleni-Shaurimoyo ward, burnt down goods of unknown value.

Most of the occupants of the six iron sheet houses affected are from Kisumu National Polytechnic.

Kaloleni sub-location assistant chief Samson Nyagol said no casualties were reported during the 4.30 pm incident.

"The response was good by the fire department team. We managed to contain the fire before spreading to o to other nearby structures in a concerted effort by the locals," he said.

Nyagol said students are largely affected after they lost everything due to the inferno.

"We have made arrangements to ensure those affected get accommodation," he added.

Some of the affected students were hosted at the Compassionate Centre for Families (CCF) in Dunga, Nyalenda B ward.

Nyagol commended locals for working closely with the firefighters to rescue the situation.

Fire brigade station in-charge officer Boaz Nyarombo said they received a distress call from a village elder over the fire outbreak.

Firefighter officer Onyango said they managed to control the fire from spreading to other nearby houses.

"The iron sheet houses were already on fire because of the gas cylinders inside which exploded," Onyango said.

The fire team, however, faced difficulties in reaching the scene due to the poor road network in the area
