Car burnt as angry Bungoma residents protest shooting dead of guard by cop

Residents of a Nzoia village, Kanduyi Constituency, Bungoma County have staged demonstrations demanding justice after a private security guard was allegedly shot dead by a police officer.

The suspected officer is mandated to protect infrastructures belonging to the Nzoia Sugar factory.

The deceased security guard also works at the company.

Lucas Wanzala, a resident, said that the deceased was on duty on the night he was reportedly shot by the officer.

Wanzala said that the guard was ferrying luggage using his bicycle that the officer claimed was stolen sugar.

“The security guard did not have any problem with the police and he had not stolen anything, he was carrying avocado in a sack,” Wanzala said.

The angry residents torched the vehicle that the police officers were using at the time of the bizarre incident.

Following the incident residents area are demanding the police officers serving the area be transferred.

While confirming the incident, Bungoma County police commander Francis Kooli condemned the act affirming that the officer had been arrested and taken to Bungoma police station.

He said the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers have launched investigations.

The police boss called on the residents and family members to remain calm as the DCI carried out a probe into the matter.

Kooli said that nobody is above the law the suspected officer made his own decision to shoot the private guard.

“The police officers who were sent here to do patrol work and maintain law and order are now harassing our people,” Wanzala said.
