The national government has taken over completion and rehabilitation of Masinde Muliro stadium in Bungoma County ahead of Madaraka Day celebrations in June.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo and his Transport counterpart Mohammed Daghar also announced the rehabilitation of Matulo airstrip ahead of the  festivities.

Speaking in Bungoma on Friday, Sports CS Ababu Namwamba acknowledged efforts thus far made by Bungoma County government towards the completion of the stalled stadium.

The CS further said he has proposed the rehabilitation of the changing rooms and back access to the VIP pavilion as required by Fifa.

He lauded the county government for initiating the proposed changes.

“During my last visit here, we discussed with the CEC Agnes Wachiye and her team the changes that should be done on this stadium. I'm glad that all the proposals have been implemented as agreed,” CS Ababu noted.

He spoke during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bungoma County government over the project takeover.

Present were Kanduyi MP John Makali, his Webuye West counterpart Dan Wanyama, Sports CEC Agnes Wachiye, MCAs among others.

Ababu announced government’s commitment to supporting youths' talent elevation to international level.

He said the MoU highlights how the two levels of government are going to work together to ensure the long awaited stadium is completed as planned.

Namwamba added that after completion, the facility will be handed back to the county government.

The CS said the facility will not only give an opportunity for youth to showcase their talents but also boost the county’s economy.

He also pointed out that plans to have the stadium lit and fixed with terraces is underway.

“We are going to install lighting around this facility so that even at night games can still go on,” he said.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka said traders who were displaced for the expansion of the stadium will be given priority in the new market in Kanduyi.

Lusaka revealed that land grabbing cases are high in Bungoma and that a taskforce has been formed to go around identifying public land.

“Those living on public land know very well that it is not theirs. I think it is only fair that when the owner comes to carry on development, it's good that you vacate,” Lusaka said.

“Those that their buildings and businesses have been marked for demolitions please move slowly don’t be forced.”

Webuye West MP Dan Wanyama who doubles as the chairperson of the sports committee in the National Assembly said Talanta Hela initiative is a serious milestone in the country but it can only succeed if the country has infrastructures needed.

"If we want this Talanta Hela initiative to greatly have positive effects in the country, we should have standard stadiums in Kenya so that the talented ones can have somewhere to showcase their talents,” Wanyama said.
