Dorcas Gachagua, bishop Margaret Wangari, evangelist Lucy Wangunjiri and Kiambu Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika pray outside the Alcohol Recovery Centre in Wangunyu, Kiambaa Constituency, Kiambu, on February 2, 2024.

Some men in Kabete constituency in Kiambu county may have been forced to stay single after women reportedly rejected them.

You may ask why. According to some of the men who spoke to Second Lady Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, women in the area considered some of the men dirty and drunk.

Simon Njonge, 34, said he had tried to marry several times but failed due to his drinking habit.

“I cannot stop drinking alcohol. I lost my job since at times I could not report to duty. I was sacked and continued drinking cheap alcohol without caution,” Njonge said.

“When I was still working, I had a beautiful lady who was a teacher. I lost her because I was so dirty, smelled of alcohol and was always drunk. She tried to talk to me to stop but I couldn't."

Njonge spoke at Kibichiku Secondary School where the wife of the Deputy President attended a medical camp.

Dorcas was accompanied by area MP Githua Wamacukuru, Kiambu Deputy Governor Mary Kirika and Bishop Charles Muturi of ACK Mt Kenya South Diocese.

Njonge said many men of his age have no wife since they suffer the same predicament of alcohol addiction.

Several men attending the event told Dorcas that they do not have a wife since alcohol and drugs sold in the area have left them dirty, weak, careless and useless.

Dorcas urged the church and the community to support her efforts to fight alcohol and drug abuse.

She said it was sad since the young men hold the seeds to procreate but they cannot sow them.

“I will facilitate your counselling, you will be rehabilitated, you will be clean until the beautiful young ladies you see will start looking for you,” she said.

“We will not watch you sleep on the roadsides, on the streets, at the trading centres or anywhere you will be watched as useless. You are the society, you have the required seeds.”

The second lady said her office is determined to see alcoholism and drug abuse wiped out.

She asked church leaders to go for the drunkards in the streets and neighbourhoods and accommodate them in churches so that they may recover from the vice.

The wife of the Deputy President decried that the Mt Kenya region was heavily affected by the abuse of alcohol and drugs and urged women to support the government’s war against these substances.

At the same time, the church promised to support the war on illicit brews and drug abuse

Anglican Bishop Muturi said true religion is one that looks after people who are downtrodden.

"History will judge us as religious leaders on what we did for the people who are down there," he said.

He revealed that several years ago the church’s efforts to fight the illicit brews were not supported, saying they were left praying for the country.

The Anglican church formed Kanisa Mashinani programme within Kabete constituency in Kiambu and it has gained followers.

He said recovering drunkards in small towns such as Wangige, Gitaru, Ruku, and Nyathuna attend services that are fully funded by the church.

Muturi applauded Dorcas for the war on substances she has launched.

The wife of the Deputy President said the young men and women who abuse drugs and alcohol are destroying their future.

“Why can't you say enough is enough? Your parents have cried a lot. Those with families, your spouses are in trouble, while the church has been praying for you. The manufacturer and the seller wants to kill you. Stop taking these things,” she said.

Kiambu Deputy Governor Kirika said that the government had embraced the work done by the office of the spouse of Deputy President on reforming people affected by drugs and alcohol.

She said the government has set up a desk in all the county hospitals to help those who are affected by drugs and alcohol.

She added that the government has created jobs for the youth who have trained in various courses and can apply.

"We have gone round Kabete subcounty and through the church initiatives to save the boy child. Many are reforming since they have found love and are being fed and given clothes and somewhere they can bathe," she said.

Kirika said those willing to change have a safe haven in churches and county government programmes put up to help addicts.
