Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that affects the skin on the feet.

It’s often characterized by itching, redness and scaly rash, commonly found in athletes or people who frequently wear tight shoes or dump socks.

However, athlete's foot has become common among many other groups of people, especially those who fail to take care of their feet.

There are three main types of athlete's foot namely; interdigital which affects spaces between toes, moccasin which starts with dryness and scaling on the soles of the feet and vesicular which forms fluid-filled blisters on the feet.

What to do

First, you need to keep your feet clean and dry. Maintain good hygiene by washing your feet daily with mild soap and warm water.

Thereafter, ensure thorough drying especially between the toes, as moisture creates an ideal breeding ground for fungus.

The next step is choosing the right footwear; opt for breathable shoes made of natural materials like leather or canvas to allow air circulation.

Always avoid tight, ill-fitting shoes that can cause excessive sweating and friction, making your feet more susceptible to athlete’s foot.

Additionally, choose socks made from, moisture-wicking materials such as cotton or wool.

These types of socks help to absorb sweat and keep your feet dry.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting socks or those made from synthetic materials that can trap moisture.

Lastly, use anti-fungal powders or sprays.
