Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has said the county has put in place measures to shelter families affected by the gas explosion incident in Embakasi.

At least three people died and more than 280 others were injured after a gas filling and storage plant caught fire Thursday night.

In a statement on Friday, Sakaja said close to 250 affected families have been identified.

"Nairobi City County is taking immediate action to shelter the families affected by the recent incident in Embakasi. The families will be accommodated in the County Embakasi Social Hall, located in Utawala near the scene of the incident," Sakaja said.

Sakaja said the county is committed to offering each family a warm meal prepared from one of the Dishi na County kitchens.

He added that the affected families will also be provided with blankets as the plan for a permanent solution is underway.

According to Governor Sakaja, all casualties from the incident have been attended to.

"Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital received and treated 216 patients today, with the last case, a child who arrived at 3:30 pm and has been catered for. Due to the influx of patients, there was an unexpected shortage of burns-related medication, our team swiftly coordinated with our other county facilities to replenish stocks at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital," he said.

"We are now fully equipped and prepared to assist any further victims."

Sakaja said the facility is open and ready to assist anyone who needs medical assistance adding that the treatment is free of charge at any of the County facilities.

He called on residents to seek emergency services to call the toll-free number 1508 for assistance.

"Our hearts go out to everyone impacted by this tragedy. In these challenging times, we stand united, ready to support and uplift one another. Together, we will recover and rebuild stronger than before."
