Azimio leader Raila Odinga has thanked leaders and Kenyans who attended the 30th memorial ceremony of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

In a statement, Raila said the reflections shared at the event of the life and times of his father brought forth memories that will inspire.

"Reflecting on today's tributes has helped us reconnect with the spirit of his life and times. His dedication to freedom lives on and continues to inspire," he said.

Jaramogi's anniversary offered a glimpse into the relationship the Odinga family had with their father.

Leaders eulogised him as a freedom fighter, a family man and an inspiration to the future generation.

This is the first time the family was holding the celebrations of the patriarch away from their home in Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County.

The memorial service marked exactly 30 years since Kenya’s founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga died.

Raila organised the memorial service to celebrate and honour his legacy and place in Kenya’s history.

Renowned scholars, pan-Africanists, thought leaders and journalists were among those present.

Jaramogi was a prominent political figure and one of Kenya’s freedom fighters who helped secure the country’s independence.

He was appointed minister for home affairs in 1963, and in 1964 became vice president under founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

In 1991, Jaramogi co-founded and became the interim chairman of Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD) party.

The formation of FORD triggered a chain of events that were to change Kenya's political landscape, culminating in 2002 ending KANU's 40 years in power, eight years after Odinga's death.

However, FORD split into two splinter groups before the 1992 elections.

Jaramogi died in 1994 and was buried at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Mausoleum in his Bondo home dubbed" Kang'o ka Jaramogi".

Among leaders who attended his memorial included Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o, former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Public Service, Performance and Delivery Management Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria and chairman of Luo Council of Elders Ker Odungi Randa among others.
