The Homa Bay government has purchased Sh25 million medicines to alleviating drugs shortage in health facilities across the county.
The drugs will be distributed to all health centres and dispensaries that have always been affected by shortage with most experiencing the shortage due to their inability to generate enough revenue to buy medicines.
The situation has in turn seen residents unable to get proper medical services at health facilities closer to them.
Governor Gladys Wanga flagged off distribution of the drugs at Wagwe health centre in Karachuonyo constituency.
The drugs were distributed to health centres and dispensaries in all eight constituencies in the county.
Wanga said distribution of the drugs will improve health services in the Level 3 and Level 2 health facilities.
“Most of our Level 3 and Level 2 health facilities lack the capacity to generate funds which can purchase drugs. This drugs will thus be distributed to the facilities to address the challenge of shortage,” Wanga said.
The governor said her administration had prioritised health sector to ensure good services are offered across all health facilities in the county.
She said health services are a catalyst for economic development.
“My administration has prioritised health sector by ensuring good services in all our health facilities. The reason is that human health is a key contributor to success in any economic activity or educational programme one is pursing,” Wanga said.
The governor warned the county employees against laxity in their duty saying it will not be tolerated.
“Residents want service delivery and they will always report officials who don’t discharge their duties effectively. Let those who are lazy to change because action will be taken against them,” she added.
Wanga promised residents that she was going to act on their grievances to ensure they get proper services.
The County government had made an official declaration that people who sleep on their jobs would not be accommodated in the government. The governor was accompanied by Health executive member Roselyn Omollo and Chief Officer Kevin Osuri.
“I am going to work on the complaints raised here to ensure the people of Wagwe get health services as required,” she said.
North Karachuonyo and area MCA Ouma Odongo accused some health workers of Wagwe health centre of laxity.
He argued that they have reports about some medics who report to work late.
“There is need for changes to be done in the health facility because the workers report to work late,” Odongo said.
