Twenty-five heads of donkeys without tongues and ears, hooves and visceral organs have been recovered in a village in Makueni County.
The parts were recovered and buried inside the pit after a multi-agency team revisited the donkey slaughter scene where ten people had earlier been arrested in Makueni on Saturday at 6.18 am.
Eastern regional police commander Joseph Ole Napeiyan said the pit had been dug in one of the suspect’s homes. He is among those in custody.
He said the matter was reported to the Makueni police station as a follow-up report on illegal slaughter and recovery of donkey parts.
"The donkey slaughter scene was revisited by a multi-agency team... They established that there was one fresh disposal pit within the homestead of a suspect currently in custody," Napeiyan told the Star on Saturday.
The police boss said the pit was excavated and a total of 25 heads of donkeys without tongues and ears, hooves and visceral organs were recovered in the said pit.
"Also recovered at the scene were an axe, machete and a knife with blood stains suspected to have been used to slaughter the donkeys," Napeiyan said.
He said the scene was processed and reburied under the public health officer's advice while the axe, machete and knife were kept as exhibits.
