In Summary

  • If we do not introduce sexuality education in the curriculum, children will still involve in sexual activities at a young age.
  • If they do not get the correct information, it may create a big consequence in the future.

Catholic bishops have protested that sex education is being taught through the back door in primary school. They say the content taught in school, especially in Grade 7, is unacceptable as it will expose minors to the use of contraceptives.

The bishops are out of order because children do not have clear information on how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies. Girls as young as nine years are becoming pregnant and boys that age are developing STIs.

Should we wait until the girl becomes pregnant or should we adopt ways of prevention? Pupils get information from their peers, who sometimes can be misinformed. Why not let the teachers teach these young adults how to protect themselves from diseases?

If we do not introduce sexuality education in the curriculum, children will still involve in sexual activities at a young age. If they do not get the correct information, it may create a big consequence in the future.

CSE not only teaches about contraceptives and sex but also gender-based violence prevention and bodily autonomy. Many parents may not be conversant with the sexuality concerns of their children. Many parents see it as a taboo to talk to their children about sex. Where else will children get correct information on their bodies and general well-being?

CSE also promotes health, well-being, human rights and gender equality. Without information on sexual reproductive health and gender equality, young people face a high risk of HIV, unintended pregnancy, STIs, GBV and discrimination.

CSE is a tool that can end harmful cultural practices and promote gender equality and respect towards each other. It can also help instil skills to develop healthy and meaningful relationships. Age-appropriate comprehensive sex education should be put in the curriculum to help children have a meaningful impact on society
