Siaya retirees issue ultimatum for unpaid salary arrears

Said they will hold demonstrations if the arrears are not cleared before ultimatum period lapses.

Over 600 retired employees of Siaya County have given Governor James Orengo's administration a five-day ultimatum to pay their salary arrears amounting to Sh72 million or they will hold demonstrations.

The retired staff worked with the county's local authorities.

They addressed the media at the Information offices in Siaya town under the Siaya Local Authorities Retirees Association led by their secretary general Philip Ochieng. 

"We have already written to our governor demanding for these payments and up to this moment we have not received any reply from him," Benedict Omondi said.

The retirees said they will camp at the governor's compound if the monies are not paid before the ultimatum period lapses.

Omondi said the monies they are demanding include Sh18 million compensation awarded to some of their members by the Industrial court.

"Our salary arrears amount to Sh72, 955,000 which we have not been paid up to this moment and this amount includes court award to 10 former local authority workers.  

"We are giving five days from today (Thursday) if that cannot be paid, we are going to do demonstrations," he said.

The retirees said some of them are sickly and are depending on the funds to cover their medical bills.

They claimed that some of the retirees died while still awaiting the payments.
