Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has called on security agencies to investigate, arrest and prosecute individuals using social media to incite ethnic and religious intolerance in Lamu County.

Speaking on Thursday, during a visit to the county, Kindiki said this will not be tolerated.

He was responding to a video that has since gone viral of leaders from the county purporting to form a caucus to kick out some communities from Lamu.

"There are people who have started ethnic and religious incitement on social media and news outlets. I have asked security officers to hunt them, arrest and have them prosecuted. We will not care about your religion, tribe or political affiliation.

"We want to make it clear that inciting ethnic religious hate is a crime under the law of Kenya and we are not going to let any person incite communities against each other, incite hatred among communities, religious groups and we want people of Kenya to live in peace," Kindiki said.

The CS was on a tour of Lamu, where he assessed the security and flooding situations in the county.

Kindiki added that no one will be forced to leave their home affirming that the government will protect all its citizens who live in Lamu, their businesses and properties.

He said the residents should have nothing to fear.

The Interior CS was reacting to a video of a group of men allegedly from the coastal county claiming that they were on a mission to liberate Lamu.

The men, the majority of whom are donning Kanzus, speak of an ethnic group that went to the county and got elected to represent the people of Lamu yet they are not originally from the county.

The group that refers to itself as "Vuguvugu la Wanati wa Lamu" in the video seen by the Star claims that outsiders have taken over the leadership of Lamu and that must be stopped.

They also claim that Mombasa is another county that is infested by outsiders.
