State has allocated Sh2.4 billion for relief food – Ruto

He said KDF will airlift any commodities required in different parts of the country.

President William Ruto has said already Sh2.4 billion has been made available to buy food and make sure it is delivered where most needed.

Ruto said last week, the government made available resources to the ministry of Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) to make sure that adequate food is available.

He was speaking at State House on Saturday when he chaired disaster response emergency meeting.

"Adequate resources will be required and that is why this team is working on numbers so that we can mobilise the resources necessary. This is to make sure that we attend to the roads that have been washed away, provide alternative roads, pathways to different parts of the country," Ruto said.

President Ruto said the move is also to make sure medicine is delivered to different parts of the country.

He further said they want to ensure no part of Kenya is left in the dark by making sure that they deliver fuel.

"Let me also say that I have instructed Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to provide their air services facilities to airlift any commodities required in different parts of Kenya and especially the last mile deliveries in the counties that are now marooned by floods," he said.

The head of state said he has received assurance from the CDF that the exercise will be rolled out immediately.

"We are also going to mobilize the National Youth Service and the engineering department," Ruto added.

The meeting was attended by various government officials including Cabinet secretaries and representatives from security organs. 

Present at the meeting was interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki,  Defence CS Aden Duale and Health CS Susan Nakhumicha.

Council of Governor's chairperson Anne Waiguru and Chief of Defence Forces Fred Ogola and Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome were also present.
