Students of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) at Siaya Town Campus on Friday morning protested over insecurity in the institution.
The faculty of Agriculture students barricaded the Siaya-Nyadorera to demand answers to what they termed us deteriorating security situation.
The ‘comrades’ cited an event of Thursday night where an intruder allegedly sneaked into a hostel in the dead of the night and inappropriately touched a female student.
Speaking to the press during the protest, the said female student Faizah Juma, explained that the intruder entered her room at midnight.
“I was asleep in the campus hostel and was woken up by a man touching my hands and legs," she said.
"I screamed and he ran into hiding. The intruder came back a few minutes later claiming that he was a security guard and I phoned a male student for help."
According to Otieno Orero, the male student who responded to the distress call, he arrived together with other male students and caught the intruder whom they handed over to the security guards.
“We woke up to find out that the suspect was freed and we are wondering whether the watchmen were in a deal with him,” Otieno said.
One of the student leaders Emmanuel Ochieng said that various members of the faculty have lately been losing electronic gadgets due to a lack of adequate security.
“It appears like the university management has dumped us here. This campus has no proper fence, we have lost laptops, phones and church instruments and now people are coming to rape our ladies," Emmanuel Ochieng, a student leader said.
"We may soon demand that we be taken back to the main campus in Bondo where security is guaranteed if our grievances won’t be addressed forthwith."
Another protester, Tony Onyango, alleged that security lights around the institution often go off at 8:00 pm leaving the institution in pitch darkness and exposing the students to thieves who target electronic gadgets.
JOOUST communications officer Keziah Ogada was not immediately available to comment on the issue.
