Several parts of Nairobi will have to go without water for an unspecified period of time.
This is after a water pipe located along the UN venue in Gigiri burst leading to a disruption in the water supply.
The major burst is affecting the main water pipeline that runs from Gigiri pumping Station to the Kabete pumping station.
The areas affected include Westlands, Kangemi, Kawangware, Dagoreti, Lavington, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Upperhill, Lang’ata, Karen, Ngong’ Road, Kibra and surrounding areas.
Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company Limited in a statement on Thursday said the burst is a result of road construction works.
The road contractor contracted by the Kenya Urban Roads Authority to undertake the dualling of the UN Avenue road damaged the DN 700MM pipe.
“The burst water pipe is located along the UN venue near Rubis petrol station and is within the proposed new roar corridor,” the statement reads.
The burst was caused by a disturbance caused by a contractor on the anchor block (concrete placed to prevent the pipeline from moving in any direction) resulting in two joints coming off leading to a major leak.
NCWSC said technicians are already on site to repair the pipe and to restore the water supply to customers impacted by the burst.
“This incident has led to loss of large volumes of water, water supply disruption in Western, Southern and parts of central region, inconvenience to residents and potential property damage,” NCWSC said.
“Our technicians are actively working to address the leak as safely as possible and to restore water supply promptly.”
The NCWSC said they had managed to contain the losses and repairs are already underway but are directing water to an alternative line for temporary supply in the meantime.
The company has apologized to the customers for the inconvenience caused by the burst and asked for their patience as technicians work round the clock to ensure the problem is resolved.
