Ugandan Police have dismissed reports alleging the arrest of Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.

In a statement on Thursday, the police said they only escorted Wine from Entebbe Airport to his home in Magere and is currently with his family.

They termed the reports of his arrest as rumours.

"We wish to inform the public that the NUP President, Kyagulanyi Robert was successfully escorted by our security team from Entebbe to his home in Magere. He reached his home around 11.20 am and is with his family and friends," UPF said on X.

"Disregard rumours of his arrest by propagandists. Meanwhile, business activities and movements along Entebbe road, within Kampala and Gayaza, are flowing smoothly."

The Police also shared images of the Ugandan Opposition leader with his wife, in their compound.

On Thursday morning Wine through his official X account said that he had been arrested soon after landing from South Africa.

In a video seen by the Star, Wine who was in the company of other leaders was grabbed by police in Civilian clothes immediately after he stepped out of the plane.

Efforts by an unidentified legislator from his National Unity Party (NUP) who had accompanied him to follow the officers were fruitless as he was also stopped.

Bobi Wine was then put into a waiting police vehicle at the airport and driven away.

The Ugandan opposition leader had been out of the country on mobilisation tours in Canada and South Africa.

On Wednesday, Ugandan Police warned that they had received information that the NUP leaders' supporters intended to hold a procession to welcome him home after his trip abroad.

They said such a process would affect the flow of traffic.

"The Joint Security Agencies have received credible intelligence indicating that a group of political activists, associated with the National Unity Platform (NUP), are currently organizing and mobilizing members of the public for an event planned at Entebbe International Airport on October 5, 2023, to welcome back NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi, who is returning from abroad," police said.

"Such a procession has the potential to disrupt the normal flow of traffic, the movement of individuals, and the operations of businesses along the Entebbe – Gayaza highway. It may also attract criminal activities, posing risks to bystanders, motorists, passengers, and businesses through acts of theft or other criminal activities."
