In Summary

  • That committee’s mandate does not go beyond the 10 issues that have been already made public.

  • You see a situation where some people want to divert attention from the real issues affecting the nation.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi

There are several issues to this (push to scrap term limits). This is diversionary. Remember the same Kenya Kwanza has been saying that nothing will come out of the talks.

They have dismissed the National Dialogue Committee and the proposal on constitutional matters, that are not within the mandate of the committee, has a very disturbing motive.

Someone somewhere wants to trigger constitutional amendments and, therefore, derail the committee’s 10-point agenda.

That committee’s mandate does not go beyond the 10 issues that have been already made public.

You see a situation where some people want to divert attention from the real issues affecting the nation, so the whole nation is engrossed with politics away from the 10 key issues that have been listed and approved.

One wonders about the vision and motive of Kenya Kwanza. Before the elections they were saying they do not want even a comma to be amended in the Constitution; they even rejected BBI.

They are now trying to entertain issues that would have been resolved by BBI, like the two-thirds gender rule, opposition leader positions, which were in BBI. But they vehemently opposed the BBI in the pretext of prioritising the cost of living.

The attempt to interfere with the terms limit has been their agenda from the word go. Remember Senator John Kinyua at one point said we need to remove the terms limit. Now Cherargei (Nandi Senator) says let's push it to seven years.

This is a government that has failed and is now looking for more time.

I don’t think we will accept a change of terms limit. The terms limit will remain two terms of five years.

The committee needs to focus on their mandate and should not be diverted to other issues. Any other agenda must be handled in the manner provided for in the Constitution.

There is an attempt to derail this process by bringing constitutional issues, so that if the committee falls into the trap of dealing with matters outside their mandate, then someone can go to court the same way they did with BBI.
