MPesa Foundation on Thursday handed over infrastructure worth Sh16 million to improve the learning atmosphere at Kanyamfwa primary school in North Karachuonyo ward,  Karachuonyo constituency.

The foundation trustee Michael Joseph handed over renovated classrooms, water tanks and chairs to the school management.

Kanyamfwa Primary started in 1922 and had dilapidated infrastructures.

Joseph said the improvement of the school infrastructure is part of the commitment they made to undertake in public schools and health centres.

He was in the company of Homa Bay executive for education Martin Opere.

“MPesa Foundation had agreed to improve the work environment in education and health. Many schools like Kanyamfwa have dilapidated infrastructure and we intend to improve them," Joseph said.

Speaking during the handover, Joseph said they focus on education because it contributes to the transformation of people and societies.

At Kanyamfwa Primary School, the foundation renovated and equipped the school with new infrastructure.

Ten classrooms including two Early Childhood Education classrooms were refurbished.

It furnished an administration block, equipped the school kitchen and constructed ablution blocks for learners.

“We're hoping that learning will be undertaken in a better environment,” he added.

Opere said the project is in line with county government plans of constructing six early childhood education classrooms per ward.

He said the Homa Bay government has allocated sh250 million in its current budget to improve and increase ECDE classrooms in 40 wards across the county.

“We increased the budgetary allocation for education to ensure we build more classrooms for our children. Thanks to MPesa Foundation for the support they have given us,” Opere said.

The school head teacher Stephen Obel said the handover of the infrastructure has motivated both children and teachers.

Previously, they did not have ablution and fence. They had a shortage of toilets among others.

“The school security has improved because it is now fenced. Previously it could be accessed from any direction,” Obel said.

He added that their condition will address disease prevalence at the institution.

“Studying in dusty classrooms promoted the spread of respiratory infections. We will no longer have them,” he said.

Community members led by newspaper columnist Jaindi Kisero are among the people who were concerned about the condition of the school and had to seek help to improve it.

Before the renovation, a proposal was written to the telecommunications company to aid the school in getting new infrastructure.

“We sought help from the foundation after politicians failed to honour promises they made to improve the school,” Kisero said.
