Kenya Power has managed to restore power in the Mt Kenya region saying it is working to restore normalcy in the remaining areas hit by blackout Friday night.
In its second update hours after several parts of the country were plunged into darkness, the power utility firm said "initial reports indicate that the power outage was caused by a fault on one of the generation plants".
The company said the outage occurred at 945pm.
"We thank our customers for their patience as we continue with the restoration exercise."
In an earlier status update, Kenya Power said the failure of electrical services was caused by a system disturbance leading to a loss of bulk power supply in various parts of the country.
It said it was working in collaboration with teams from all involved sector partners to facilitate speedy restoration of supply in the shortest time possible.
"We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused and we assure them that our technical teams are currently working to identify the root cause and restore power to the affected areas. An update on the restoration progress will be provided as soon as possible," Kenya Power said.
The blackout was reported in most counties including Nairobi, Nyamira, Kajiado, Kakamega, Siaya, Kiambu and Meru.
The darkness caused a crisis at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with activities such as luggage handling becoming completely incapacitated.
Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen issued an apology following the dire situation at the JKIA saying he will issue the way forward Saturday morning.
"I am really sorry for what has happened at JKIA with the blackout. There is no excuse worth reporting and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness. I will be announcing the decision we will make tomorrow 9am at JKIA after a meeting with the leadership of the airport. Once again I am sorry," he said in a statement.
Three months ago on May 16, Kenya Power announced the loss of electricity supply in parts of Nairobi, North Rift and Western.
Like with the latest case, the company cited system disturbance which it said affected major transmission lines.
