Suspect shot dead during botched arrest in Kisii

Detectives in Kisii are investigating an incident where a suspect was shot dead during a botched arrest at Nyatoima, Riana location.

A police report from Kerina police station indicates that two officers had been dispatched to arrest the suspect some 13kms away from the station following a report by the area community policing chairman.

The police report did not disclose the offence for which the community policing chairman wanted the suspect arrested.

The officer in charge of Riana police post Daniel Maguk dispatched two police officers namely Cheruiyot Kibet and James Moranga to apprehend the suspect who had locked himself in his house.   

“On arrival, they forced the door open and as they were affecting the arrest, the suspect now deceased, attacked Officer Cheruyoit with a kitchen knife stabbing him in the face four times occasioning him serious injuries,” the police report said.

It said the officer was further hit on the back of the head with a blunt object by an unknown person causing a big swell.

“This prompted PC Cheruyoit to fire three rounds of ammunition from his AK 47 riffle. The bullet hit the left-hand side through the stomach exiting from the right side,” the police report added.

The assailant identified as 21-year-old Fairbun Macharia Matima, was pronounced dead on arrival at the Iyabe Subcounty Hospital.

The injured officer was stitched at the same hospital and later referred to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital for a head scan since blood was still oozing from ears and nose, the police said.

“The scene was visited and processed by the scene of crime personnel and the body moved to Kisii Teaching and Referral Mortuary awaiting autopsy,” the police report indicated.
