Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta on July 21, 2023.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has finally spoken on the allegations that he is funding the Azimio anti-government protests.

Speaking to the media on Friday evening, Uhuru wondered if the accusations came about because of his association with Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

"I'm I not supposed to talk to my friends? Is that a crime in Kenya today? Maybe you should tell me," he said.

He said he has had moments when he wondered how he was connected to the issues that Kenyans have raised.

The former President denied any involvement in Azimio protests saying:

"Have you seen me in any of those events? Have you seen me talk about any of those events?" he posed.

The former president went on to state that he had handed over power to President William Ruto because he believed that there was democracy in the country.

"I may not have supported this government, but I accepted the will of the people," he said.

Uhuru has not been seen in public with Raila since the second wave of Azimio demonstrations began.

The ex-president was in Goma, DRC during the Wednesday protests for a meeting on the Eastern DRC peace initiative.
