Kenya National Bureau of Statistic Director General Macdonald Obudho,Treasury PS James Muhati and KNBS chairman Stephen Wainaina during the launch of the 2022 health survey key indicators report in Nairobi on January 17,2023.

A report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics that was done on the household population has indicated that 40 per cent of Kenya’s population is under 15 years.

Speaking at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre on Monday, KNBS Director General Macdonald Obudho stated that there is a need for support and more resources to help the youths.

"This means we have a large group of people to really plan for because, at this age and below, we require a lot of resources to support the youth," Obudho said.

In terms of headship, Obudho narrates that about 34 per cent of the households are headed by women compared to the last report of 2014  with a two per cent increase.

The report shows that  "In the last Kenya Demographic and Health Surveys of 2014, it was at 32 percent which means it has gone up over the period."

Obudho adds that there is an average of three or four members in every household.

He adds that population growth has gradually slowed down compared to the last report.

"In 2014 we established the number to be about 3.9 members which means there is something happening to our population and we are actually slowing down in terms of our population growth," Obudho said.

The 2022 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (2022 KDHS) was implemented by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) collaborating with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and other stakeholders.

Data was collected from February 17 to July 31, 2022. The sample for the 2022 KDHS report was drawn from the Kenya Household Master Sample Frame (K-HMSF).

The sample size was computed at 42,300 households, with 25 households selected per cluster, which resulted in 1,692 clusters spread across the country, 1,026 clusters in rural areas, and 666 in urban areas.

The survey was done through a questionnaire where they used the household questionnaire, the woman’s questionnaire, the man’s questionnaire, and the biomarker questionnaire.
