•According to the taxman, this is a 14.5 per cent growth compared to 2022 when 5.5 million Kenyans filed their tax returns.

Kenya Revenue Authority staff assist members of the public rushing to beat the midnight deadline in filing tax returns at the support centre at the Nairobi Railways Club on June 30, 2016.

More than 800,000 Kenyans filed tax returns before the closure of the 2022-2023 financial year, compared to last year.

Data from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) shows that 6.3 million filed their 2022 tax returns by midnight on June 30.

According to the taxman, this is a 14.5 per cent growth compared to 2022 when 5.5 million Kenyans filed their tax returns.

“KRA commends taxpayers for turning up in large numbers to meet their tax obligations. This is a true show of patriotism that should be embraced more in the next financial year,” KRA said in a statement.

Following the deadline, Kenyans who had not filed their returns will pay a Sh2,000 fine or five per cent of the tax due for individuals or Sh20,000 or five per cent of the tax due for non-individuals.

KRA cites the growth to the early release of p9 forms by employers, Kenyans taking the initiative to file returns, and collaboration between the taxman and organizations to implement off-site filling support.

"Some of the success drivers includen early release of P9 forms by employers, taxpayers consistently taking the initiative to comply with their return filing obligations, a collaboration between KRA and various stakeholders including," KRA added.

The taxman says that its service support framework also contributed to the high compliance.
