It was not a normal day in office for Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale on Saturday after he was requested in Mukumu Hospital to perform a surgery.
In a statement, Khalwale said his patient, Kisumu Polytechnic lecturer Sebastian Lidigu had been badly injured with a machete after his son attacked him.
The Senator however got to him in time at Mukumu Hospital and performed a 2-hour surgery.
"Kisumu Polytechnic lecturer Sebastian Lidigu was this morning grievously injured after his machete welding son attacked him. Am glad to have saved his life after a grueling 2hrs 10 min operation at Mukumu Hospital," he said.
According to photos shared by Khalwale, Lidigu sustained several cuts on his head and arm.
It is yet to be established what led to the attack.
Before politics, Khalwale practiced medicine.
He pursued medicine at the University of Nairobi from 1980 to 1987, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
He was posted as a medical officer in Nairobi at Kenyatta National Hospital, Kakamega, Kisii, Machakos, Msambwebi and Kirinyaga districts.
He said his first hands-on experience in management was between 1988-90 in the then Kakamega District (now Kakamega county) where he boasts of ensuring that all hospitals, health centres and dispensaries were optimally operational with adequate staff, constant supply of medicine and vaccines.
Later, he moved into private practice in Mombasa and Kakamega towns from where he rose to join national politics.
In the usual day-to-day business, a senator is expected to represent the interests of the county.
At the Senate, they take part in law-making by considering, debating and approving bills concerning counties.
They also determine the allocation of national revenue among counties.
