The government is set to recruit 20,000 new teachers during the Financial year 2023/2024 to continue to bridge learners' teacher ratio.
Parliamentary education committee chairman Julius Meli also revealed that in the budget to be tabled in parliament next month, the government had also budgeted for the promotions of 10,000 teachers.
Meli revealed that Sh2.2bn had been set aside for the promotions to motivate teachers who have been on the same scale for a long.
“The government of President William Ruto wants to ensure that all trained teachers both in primary and secondary were recruited and bridge the growing shortages and ratios across the country,” Meli said.
During the current 2022/2023 financial year, TSC recruited 30,000 teachers despite the increase in enrollment in schools and the ever-rising number of unemployed teachers.
He spoke at Kobujoi ground during the Aldai constituency form 4’s education day hosted by the area member of parliament Maryanne Kitany.
The Ministry of Education also needs to increase the number of C.S.Os to monitor the quality of education learners were receiving from the teachers.
Meli challenged secondary school managers led by the principal to prudently manage resources in their respective institutions noting that many schools had nothing to show the public in development.
The MP singled out the Sh5,000 each student receives from the Ministry of Education for Maintenance and Repairs (M.R.I.) kitty which amounts to the colossal amount of money a school receive.
“Some schools have constructed magnificent structures like libraries, and laboratories while others have nothing to show what they have done to the kitty…we must account for every shilling sent to your school,” Meli charged.
He welcomed the decision by the government to use the NG-CDF infrastructure to disburse the infrastructure improvement in schools saying it was a welcome step as their model had worked well.
On the university education, the MP said they were in agreement with the government on funding university education and the new model.
He said students joining universities and needy will receive full government scholarships while those able should be ready to pay.
“We have total orphans; others are from very humble backgrounds, they should not fear because they are known and will be identified for full scholarships,” Meli added.
The MP also revealed that each TVET will receive Sh200M for improvement and increase their capacities and asked those who miss the university entry mark to take technical marketable courses.
