A court has ruled that embattled Preacher Eliud Wekesa alias Yesu Wa Tongaren has no case to answer.

This is after the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence.

The prosecution had requested for Wekesa to be detained, to allow investigations to continue.

He had been accused of unlawful operation of an unregistered society, radicalisation and money laundering but on Tuesday the prosecution said it lacked evidence.

While addressing the media, Wekesa thanked his followers for standing with him and even contributing money while he was in custody.

"Nataka kuwashukuru watu wa Mungu kwa kusimama na mimi na familia yangu hadi wakatii huu, hata kwa kumpaa Nabii pesa ya matumizi," he said.

(I want to thank the people of God for standing with me and my family during this period, and for giving my wife money for our home expenses).

Roots Party Leader George Wajackoyah represented Yesu wa Tongaren in court.

Wekesa had been in police custody for the last four days as he was undergoing a mental assessment test, after being declared mentally unstable.

“The court has agreed and granted permission to the prosecution side to detain the suspect for four more days to allow them to complete the probe and carry out the mental assessment,” Olando said.

Last week, he was summoned by the Bungoma DCI officer Elijah Macharia for questioning over his New Jerusalem church and has been in police custody.
