Azimio MPs have walked out of the National Assembly in protest of Speaker Moses Wetang'ula's refusal to okay the removal of Nominated MP Sabina Chege as deputy minority whip.

During a sitting on Thursday, Wetang'ula declined to kick out Chege, saying the Standing Orders allow for replacement and not removal.

This prompted the minority MPs, led by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi to walk out.

At the time, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw'ah was lauding the Speaker on the decision.

He however had to pause to allow the Azimio legislators to walk out.

"I can allow those walking out to do so quietly," he said before pausing.

The Speaker gave the MPs a period of 30 days to organise their house and decide whether they still wanted to pursue the changes.

They will then get back to him after.

Azimio wants Chege to be removed for allegedly shifting her loyalty to Kenya Kwanza.

On Wednesday, the MPs accused Wetang'ula of frustrating the opposition by delaying communicating his ruling on the matter.

Wandayi further accused the Speaker of playing accomplice.

"It is not the mandate of the Speaker or the majority side to decide for us who will be our leaders in this House," he said.

"It is now almost a month since we wrote to you, that delay means that our side is incapacitated, we cannot manage our affairs properly because of a vacancy in our leadership."

The Raila Odinga-led outfit resolved to kick out Chege during a Parliamentary Group meeting at Stoni Athi in Machakos County on April 6.
