A multi-agency security team in Kisii is hunting for a prime suspect who escaped a police dragnet during a major anti-narcotics operation on Friday.

The raid, led by Kisii County Police Commander, targeted a suspected drug trafficking network in Jokivilla, Nyamataro area, Kisii Township.

Officers seized 79 brooms of suspected cannabis sativa and rolling papers (Rizla).

Six suspects were arrested and are assisting police with investigations before being arraigned in court.

The main suspect, who is out on a Sh5 million bond over similar charges, slipped away during the operation.

Police have launched a manhunt to apprehend him.

Friday’s operation comes just days after two other major drug seizures.

On August 13, police in Isebania, acting on a public tip-off, intercepted a motorcycle carrying two men with a black bag containing 67 large rolls of cannabis sativa weighing 5.5 kg.

The haul has an estimated street value of Sh165,000.

The suspects, arrested at Motemorabu police post, were later transferred to Isebania police station, while the motorcycle and contraband were secured as exhibits.

A day earlier, on August 12, officers on patrol along the Kakamega–Mumias Road recovered an abandoned black Toyota Fielder.

A search revealed bhang packed in seven bags weighing 159.15 kg, with a street value of Sh4,774,500.

The vehicle was towed to Kakamega police station as investigations to trace its owner continue.

The National Police Service reiterated its commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and curbing the distribution of illegal substances across the country.

A similar crackdown on August 12 in Soweto’s Duka Moja area of Kayole subcounty led to the destruction of 15,000 litres of illicit brew.

The officers also permanently shut down the brewing den during the raid.

Police said the raids would continue as they pursue the suspects behind the illegal operation, with further raids planned to dismantle similar networks across the country.
