Senate Speaker Amason Kingi on Wednesday declined to give senators an opportunity to grill Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on the Shakahola deaths.

Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei had stood on a point of order seeking the Speaker's indulgence for senators to ask questions about the Shakahola cult deaths.

The senator argued that the Standing Orders give senators leeway to ask any supplementary questions when a CS is appearing in the House.

Cherargei had asked the Speaker to allow senators to help him grill Kindiki on the deaths that have happened in his Kilifi county.

"At least you would have allowed us to ask some questions about Shakahola in your county....some of us are ready to ask questions on your behalf,'' Cherargei said.

However, Kingi ruled that those with supplementary questions can submit them as substantive questions when the CS appears next time.

"I have noted that some of these supplementary questions can be asked as substantive questions," he said.

The death toll in Shakahola has hit more than 90 with more bodies still believed to be buried in shallow graves inside the Shakahola Forest.

Hundreds of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie's followers had moved to the vast forest to fast to death to allegedly meet Jesus Christ.
