The Kenya medical practitioners and Dentists’ Union (KMPDU) has issued a 7-day strike notice to Nandi County over salary delays.

The union through its North Rift chapter led by its chairman Dr Dawin Ambuka and secretary general Dr Kamonzi Mulei said the doctors' strike in Nandi County would begin on April 14, 2023.

Also present was the South Rift chairman Dr Cheruiyot Rotich

The officials said the medics had not received salaries since February and some risked being evicted from their houses over rent arrears.

The union is also demanding promotions for the 70 members of the union in Nandi County.

They spoke outside the Kapsabet County referral hospital before matching to the county headquarters to present the union petition.

The doctors also demanded health insurance coverage for doctors together with their respective families.

“It is unfortunate for us to be treating patients yet we have no health cover,” Dr Mulei noted.

However, Nandi county secretary Dr Francis Sang said the county was not to blame for the salary delays as the National treasury had not disbursed money to Nandi County for the last three months.

Sang said everyone was facing the same problems and not a preserve for doctors as the entire county establishment including the executive had salary delays.

Doctors also demanded the implementation of the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement signed with the Council of Governors.

However, Sang said the issue of the CBA was not squarely a Nandi County affair, but a countrywide one
