Pwani university suspends learning after fatal accident

Learning at Pwani University has been suspended following the tragic accident involving one of their buses on Thursday.

In a memo by Vice Chancellor Mohamed Rajab, learning will resume on Monday.

"Following the tragic accident that took place in Naivasha involving our bus which was going for sports in Eldoret we wish to inform all students and faculty members that classes are hereby suspended. Normal classes will resume on Monday," read the memo.

Rajab said details of the accident are still scanty but a team has been dispatched to Naivasha to gather more information.

Unconfirmed reports indicate about 14 people lost their lives after the bus collided with a matatu.

The school is expected to set up a desk at the university to share information with the parents.

Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has shared a message of condolences to the school and families of those who lost their lives.

Machogu noted that 7 students and 3 staff perished in the accident that occurred at Kayole area along Naivasha- Nairobi Highway today 30th March 2023.

"I wish the students who were critically injured and transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized treatment and those who are still being managed at Naivasha Level 4 Hospital Theater, a quick recovery," Machogu said in a statement.

"I similarly wish a quick recovery to the passengers in the PSV who were injured."

Kilifi county governor Gideon Mung'aro has condoled with the family of the bereaved.

He also dispatched a team from his office to Naivasha.

The team is being led by the director of delivery unit in his office Fikirini Jacobs who is also a former student leader at the Pwani University.

Kilifi north MP Owen Baya who served as dean of students at Pwani University before venturing into politics sent a message of condolence to the students.

"With deep sorrow and heartfelt condolences I have just learnt that Pwani University students have been involved in a grisly Road Accident at Naivasha Kayole. 14 students are feared dead and several injured. May God help the injured and rest in peace those that are gone. Painfully sorry," read the message
