Anti-government protesters on Thursday set ablaze the United Democratic Alliance party offices.

This comes barely two weeks after protesters in Kisumu burnt down UDA offices.

Two vehicles were also burnt in the Kisumu incident. Siaya is the home county of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

UDA party coordinator Siaya County Waore Dianga said some youths stormed the premises by vandalising and taking away, the iron sheets that were used as fences to the premises.

Waore said after this, they went ahead to break the doors and windows which they also took. He said UDA had only rented the building for their offices as the property belongs to a resident.

He said this happened before the structure was set ablaze.

According to Bernard Odinga, UDA youth leader within the county, the police were fought off by the protesters.

While condemning the incident, Odinga said before torching the structure the youths engaged the police in a running battle and attempts by the police to lob teargas canisters to repulse them were unsuccessful.

"Following the Monday last week demos and incident that occurred, we had expressed concern with the police over the security of this place and they assured us that they were alert and everything was okay," he said.

The setback comes amidst plans by the ruling party to intensify their recruitment drive in the region.

UDA established an office in Kisumu on March 4, amove the party secretary general Cleophas Malala said was to paint Kisumu yellow.

"My first assignment is to open a UDA party office in Kisumu. We have registered 5,325 members in the county. Watu wa Dala karibisheni UDA. Kisumu is going to be painted yellow," he said

The registration period was to run from March to  June 2023 with a target of over 250,000 members.
