Mwingi Level 4 hospital medical superintendent Dr Evans Mumo has disclosed that freezers in the mortuary that collapsed over two years have nor been replaced.
Mumo said the morgue has a capacity of nine bodies but collapsed when it had to cater for more than 30 bodies during the River Enziu bus tragedy.
"Two years ago when River Enziu swallowed more than 30 lives, the morgue was overwhelmed with over 70 bodies and this led to the collapse of our three freezers," Mumo said.
The doctor added that the morgue was designed over 30 years ago and the hospital has even written a proposal for the freezer replacement but in vain.
He also noted that the hospital has several stalled projects including the new modern morgue and the mother and child centre.
"The new mortuary which is at 90 per cent complete has a capacity of 30 bodies and it was initiated during Governor Malombe's first term. The mother and child centre has a 100-bed capacity," he said.
He said currently the occupancy in the medical ward is more than the capacity recommended and this has forced patients to share beds.
The amenity ward has also remained without equipment for over five years despite the facility being fully constructed with a capacity of 24 patient rooms and having used more than Sh50 million for construction.
"If the amenity ward is equipped, it can boost revenue for the hospital and the county," he said.
Mumo also said the hospital attends to more than 400 outpatients daily basis and its bed capacity has increased from 100 to 200. He, however, lauded the county for the distribution of the medical supplies and drugs last week.
The doctor also added that the facility requires a stable water supply for smooth operations.
"The hospital initially used water from a borehole sunk on Tyaa River but we cannot afford the diesel to pump water as it is very costly, we request solar panels instead," he said.
Kitui county health chairman Mwangangi Munyasya said they will work closely with the executive to ensure all the stalled projects are completed.
County assembly speaker, Kevin Kinengo said the assembly will work closely with the executive to ensure residents benefit.
