National bar owners association has said the industry was affected during the Azimio La Umoja protests that occurred in various parts of the country on Monday.
They revealed that the industry lost Sh2.7 billion on that day.
"On the onset of that day only we lost Sh2.7 billion worth of business. There was violence that affected some of our members," said Boniface Gachoka, Secretary General.
He explained that the business was greatly affected in Kisumu where everything was stolen and had to shut down because what they sell is comfort and the majority of people are interested.
Gachoka noted that the association was caught by surprise when they saw the return of demonstrations which were said would be peaceful.
"They did what they did and we are actually counting a very big loss in terms of second largest payers of taxes in Kenya," he said.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the county lost about Sh40 million due to the Azimio protests that occurred on Monday.
He said the county collected less than half of the daily revenue collection.
Also, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua said the protests had cost the country Sh2 billion.
“Due to lack of business in the Nairobi CBD, the country has lost almost Sh2 billion in terms of business and the money could have been circulating in the economy,” he stated.
Gachagua explained that a number of business people did not open their premises for fear of looting and destruction of property having considered what happened in Kisumu where chairs and food were looted,” he added.
