A family from Kisii is demanding justice for their son, William Mayenga, a third-year student at Maseno University, who was shot dead on Monday during Azimio protests.

The parents of the slain student-father Joash Mayenga and mother Evelyn Miruka-said they are yet to understand why their first-born son was killed "in cold blood".

Police have yet to comment on the claims. When contacted over the matter, Kisumu county police commander Alphonce Kimanthi told the Star he would get back. That was yet to happen by press time.

Everlyne Miruka said the security officers were to ensure the security of learners.

The parents now want investigations into why their son was shot dead under unclear circumstances.

The body is at Coptic Mission morgue in Luanda subcounty.

The postmortem failed to take place Tuesday afternoon as government pathologist Dickson Mchana urged the family to comply with government regulations.

Mayenga was studying education.

The family was unsatisfied with the pathologist's directives.

“We have wasted a lot of time here, we expected that the pathologist performs his duty so that we are able to ferry the body to Kisii for burial plans,” a family member said.

"My son was a calm person, very humble and I never expected this, he was to graduate next year."

On the other hand the pathologist said whether the family is satisfied or not with his decisions he will stick to the law as required.

The pathologist was addressing the press when he arrived at Coptic Mission morgue.

“We can’t go on with the postmortem as we had planned earlier because of laws we must follow in order to accomplish that,” Mchana said.

“Before the postmortem takes place, parents of the slain student must report to the nearest police station, after that they will be given an officer to accompany that body and receive the postmortem report,” he said.

Mchana said it's procedural that anybody who loses life under unclear circumstances be reported to police first before anything takes place.

“This is time wasted, that body will remain untouched until the parents of the late student comply with the law as required; if the deceased has no parents, the guardians will do,” he added.

The pathologist directed the morgue director in charge Ali Oballa for the body to remain untouched until the family complies with the requirement.

According to a police report, during the protests, they invaded the Sairam supermarket, in Maseno town and other business premises along Kisumu-Busia road.

The report further indicated that they went ahead and lit bonfires and barricaded the road with stones.

"After some time, the students started pelting stones at the police line where they damaged window panes of 10 houses and the police station," it read in parts.

It further indicated that the protesters overpowered the officers who were manning the station after the officers ran out of tear gas canisters and blanks.

The report stated that six police officers were injured during the skirmishes.

"This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets. Consequently, the third-year student was hit in the neck," the police report read.

Yesterday students went onto the streets to call for justice for Mayenga.
