The mother of the late Maseno University student has said when she got the call, she was told that her son was admitted to the hospital.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Everline Miruka said she only knew the truth after getting to the hospital.

"Nilipata hizo habari kwa mshtuko sana. Nikaambiwa mtoto ako hospitali na wakanidanganya hajakufa. Kufika nikaambiwa huko kwa mlango mtoto alikufa kitambo," she said.

This is loosely translated to: "I received the news shockingly. I was told that my child was at the hospital, and they lied that he wasn't dead. When I got to the hospital, they told me my child was long dead".

Miruka said her son, William Mayenga, who was a third-year student, was the firstborn.

Mayenga was born on May 2002.

Lamenting her son's death, the mother wondered how the people mandated with protecting her son ended up shooting him dead.

"What did my son do to warrant to be killed like a bandit?" she asked.

Mayenga was hit on the neck around 5 pm.

He had joined other Azimio la Umoja demonstrators on Monday, following the call for protests.

According to a police report, during the protests, they invaded the Sairam supermarket, in Maseno town and other business premises along Kisumu-Busia Road.

Police said the students started pelting stones at the police line, adding that the protestors overpowered them after they ran out of teargas canisters and blanks.

The report stated that six police officers were injured during the skirmishes.

"This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets. Consequently, the 3rd year student was hit on the neck," the police report read.

He was rushed to Coptic Hospital where was pronounced dead on arrival.

Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has since condemned the fatal shooting.

"As we send condolence messages to the family of the slain student and the Maseno University fraternity, we demand that the police officer who fired the killer bullet be arrested and prosecuted as soon as possible," he said.

The IPOA and the NPS have launched investigations into the same.
