Two armed robbers were Sunday shot dead and two assault rifles were recovered following a fierce shootout in Kigumo, Murang’a county.

The shooting happened near Kinyona Forest at around 9 am.

On Saturday, the thugs had staged a robbery at Unaitas SACCO Mununga branch, within Kigumo town.

They made away with an unknown amount of money after disarming a police officer and taking possession of his G3 rifle.

The marauding gang of six that has been on police radar had on February 25, wrestled an AK-47 rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition from a police officer on patrol within Muthithi area, which they used in Saturday’s robbery incident.

In a joint operation by officers from Murang’a county backed up by an elite team from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, the officers combed Kinyona forest of the larger Aberdare Park before coming across the two who challenged them to a duel.

What followed was a volley of fierce gunfire that brought the entire forest ecosystem to a standstill, as the officers returned fire with remarkable precision killing the two on the spot.

The two police rifles were recovered following the onslaught and a bag containing Sh1.13 Million stolen from Unaitas Sacco was recovered.

Bodies belonging to the fallen thugs were taken to Murang'a Level V Hospital mortuary awaiting identification as a manhunt for the rest of the suspects ensued.

"A hunt for more suspects is ongoing," police said.

County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo lauded police officers for working tirelessly to weed out the criminals.

He however noted that the habit of criminals grabbing firearms from police officers has to come to an end saying it is a serious offence that will be dealt with ruthlessly.

“Criminals who are adventurous enough to do that, we will treat you like enemies of the people because you’re declaring war on the people of Kenya by grabbing police officers’ firearms”.

Karuku sought to assure residents that there is no threat to their security and that security agents will ensure the incident will not recur.
