The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has named city lawyer and politician Migosi Ogamba as the new board chairperson.

Ogamba, an ally of President William Ruto, was among the new directors who joined the company during Kengen's AGM in January.

Others were Energy PS Alex Wachira and Rosemarie Wairimu Wanyoike.

Ogamba was picked on Tuesday during a full board members meeting, succeeding former Chief Of Defence Forces Samson Mwathethe.

Mwathethe was affected by a shake-up of parastatal chiefs in February when he was named the non-executive chairperson of the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI).

Ogamba was Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu's running mate for the Kisii county governor's seat.

His appointment is seen as part of President Ruto's strategic plan to appease the Abagusii community with top state posts.

Ogamba is a seasoned lawyer with over 30 years of legal practice.

"He is a driven, detail-oriented senior advocate, with a proven track record of leading teams, forging long-lasting client relationships and influencing organisational productivity by ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements," KenGen said in a statement.

Ogamba holds a Bachelor of Law from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma in Law from the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, University of London and a Post-Graduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law.

In February, Maurice Nduranu and Joseph Sitati resigned from the board of KenGen in the shake-up of the leadership of the company.

The shake-up also saw the departure of Peris Mwangi and Phyllis Wakiaga.
