Ruto: Jubilee failed on UHC, but this time we'll get it right

The head of state said that for UHC to work, the government will take a bottom-up approach

President William Ruto has insisted that delivery in Universal Health Coverage must be delivered under his government.

He said the service will be delivered when all levels of government work together to achieve the common goal of providing quality health care to citizens.

Ruto bashed the Jubilee government for failing to deliver the UHC promise, emphasising that he will make it a reality under the Kenya Kwanza government.

" Universal Health Care is a must to deliver. Jubilee tried and didn't work But we are not to fail at this time. We must get it right," he said.

The head of state said that for UHC to work, the government will take a bottom-up approach.

He explained that the most effective way of dealing with health care is by working with Community Health Volunteers (CHV)and workers.

He revealed that during last week's Governor's summit, it was agreed that 100,00 CHVs will be hired across all counties by both the National and County governments.

"CHV and workers will now be hired by both county and national governments as the first line of response and contact between the healthcare system and the citizens of Kenya," Ruto said.

In addition, the President said that the government will ensure all workers are trained to their capacity in the same manner so that there are no gaps between the national and county governments.

He also reiterated his desire to have a  publicly funded Universal healthcare programme, which would ensure there is increased access to quality healthcare without anyone suffering financial loss
