Court suspends Sh177m fraud case against Mary Walingo

The order also suspended charges against four other accused persons

A Nakuru court temporarily suspended the Sh177 million fraud case facing Professor Mary Walingo and four others.

Justice Charles Kariuki issued the order on December 28, 2022.

"Pending hearing and determination of the application, an order issued staying the proceedings in Nakuru anti-corruption court" the order reads.

The same order was extended when the matter came up for mention in January this year.

The matter is to be mentioned on February 15, for further directions.

Seven days ago, Employment and Labour relations Judge Hellen Wasilwa ordered Maasai Mara University to reinstate the professor and pay her half the salary accrued during the time she was suspended.

The judge said the institution should comply with a decision of the public service commission delivered in September last year that overruled the decision of the university to terminate her employment.

Following the decision, Otwal and Manwa associate advocates wrote a letter to all council members of the Maasai Mara University informing them of the return of Walingo.

The firm is acting for the professor.

The letter indicates that the professor was 'to resume her duties on January 23, however, due to a delay in serving the signed copy, she has rescheduled her return to January 25.

The institution's Vice-Chancellor Walingo and four others were released on Sh20 million bond or Sh10 million cash bail, after denying corruption and abuse of office charges in August last year.

Walingo was charged before the Nakuru anti-corruption court alongside her deputies Simon Kasaine and John Almadi.

Also charged were finance officer Anacklet Biket and the institution’s driver Noor Hassan.

They are jointly accused of conspiring and irregularly obtaining the funds on diverse dates between January 24, 2016, and July 2019, where Walingo is said to have directed the unlawful expenditure
