A family in Sika beach in Bondo Sub County is in mourning following a tragic boat accident involving two of their kin.

Sika beach is in Mageta Island.

The casualties who are blood brothers, Dedan Omondi Damai, 22, and Wycliffe Onyango Damai, 21, had gone fishing at the beach before they met their untimely death.

As confirmed by the beach chairman Julius Odemba, their boats capsized as a result of strong waves in the lake a few minutes after casting their nets and off for the shore.

"The strong waves overturned the boats leading to the drowning just about ten minutes after casting their boats as confirmed by fellow fishermen who were ahead of them," Odemba said.

Odemba urged fishermen to ensure their safety gears are on before embarking on their duty.

"Make sure you have your life-saving jackets on and in case there are strong waves none should be allowed to go to the lake," Odemba urged.

The search for the brothers who drowned is on.

The family has called on the Siaya county government to give them support to retrieve the bodies.

The beach unit chairperson further called on the coast guard to enforce relevant laws and guidelines to prevent future tragedies.

"The coast guard should be strict and ensure that every fisherman follows the rule."
