Thika Water and Sewerage Company have issued a statement confirming that no oil spilled into Chania River after the recent oil tanker accident near Blue Post hotel.

The Company's management said they took the necessary steps to ensure the oil does not spill into the river.

"We would like to inform all our esteemed customers on the status of the notice issued on December 14, 2022, regarding an oil tanker accident that occurred at the River Chania bridge resulting in oil spillage necessitating us to close the river intake to prevent contamination," they said in a statement.

"We are glad to inform you that no oil spilled into the river as we took necessary preventive measures together with respective authorities."

They said the oil that had spilled on the road and the trenches were fully cleared and disposed of appropriately, "hence our water was not contaminated and we have fully resumed supply."

They appreciated those who gave a hand in assisting to control the spillage to ensure it does not contaminate the river hence affecting supply.

"We would like to appreciate the various stakeholders that assisted us in controlling the spillage among them the county government of Kiambu, Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Kenya National Highway Authority (Kenha)," they said.

"Water Regulatory Authority, Kenya Police traffic department, National Environment Management Authority, various media houses and the owner of the truck who ensured the disposal of the spilled oil and all the preventive measures were undertaken."

The accident involved an oil tanker that overturned after colliding with a truck at River Chania.

The accident caused a crazy traffic snarl along the Thika-Nyeri highway that lasted for more than 6 hours as police and officials of Thika Water and Sewerage Company (Thiwasco) struggled to prevent an oil spill into the river.

According to eyewitnesses, the oil tanker collided with a canter truck at the bridge making the cabin of the smaller lorry detach and plunge into Chania river while the trailer overturned on the road spilling thousands of litres of oil.
