Narok Senator Ledama Olekina.

Narok county senator Ledama Ole Kina now says President William Ruto could be seeking a handshake with Opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Ledama in atweet said the proposal to create an opposition office could be a plot to seek a truce with Odinga.

"Is president William Ruto seeking a “colourful” handshake with my party leader Raila Odinga through parliament?" Ledama said.

The Narok senator added that Ruto seems to be applying the 48 laws of power in his leadership.

"His recent letter to the speakers of both Houses of Parliament depict a man whose future will be determined by application of 48 laws of power and not chest-thumping," Ledama said.

Opposition chiefs Odinga and Martha Karua could hold powerful offices complete with staff and enjoy hefty benefits if a new bill is enacted.

The Political Parties (Amendment) Bill, 2022 creates the office of the official opposition leader and his deputy which could give a lifeline to the Azimio chiefs.

“The principal object of this Bill is to amend the Political Parties Act No 11 of 2011 to provide for establishment, functions, staffing and administration of the Offices of the Official Opposition Leader and the Official Deputy Opposition Leader,” the Bill reads in part.

The Bill comes at a time when President William Ruto has indicated a soft spot for the creation of the positions to make the opposition more effective to check his administration.

Ruto is said to have whipped his troops during last week’s Kenya Kwanza parliamentary group retreat to draft a constitutional amendment bill to anchor the positions in the country’s supreme law.

Currently, losers of presidential elections do not hold any public office, a situation that many believe has disenfranchised the opposition and their supporters.
