The National Police Service has said it will provide adequate security for the planned Azimio rallies.

In a statement, on the behalf of the Inspector General, Deputy IG Noor Gabow on Tuesday urged the attendants to maintain peace.

"However, any breach of the peace shall be dealt with in accordance with the law," Gabow said.

The rallies are scheduled to be held on Wednesday, December 7 and on December 12, which will be parallel Jamhuri Day Celebrations.

Article 37 of the Constitution provides that every person has the right to peaceful gatherings, demonstrations and picketing.

NPS further acknowledged that Article 33(3) directs the public to respect each other's rights, in exercising their freedom of expression.

On Sunday, President William Ruto directed the Interior CS Kithure Kindiki to provide enough security for the rallies, warning that there should be no vandalism.

"I have asked CS Kindiki to liaise with the Azimio principals to acquire their schedule and provide them with enough security for their exercise," he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, during a meeting with Tharaka-Nithi leaders on security and development with the county, CS Kindiki said they will provide security on condition that the rallies are conducted within the law.

"The organizers must share with security agencies details of their planned activities including schedule, location and frequency and commit to respect the rights and activities of others including those who are not engaged in the demos," he said.
