A two-year-old child drowned in basin water outside their house in Dandora, Nairobi on Wednesday.

The mother of the child Tabitha Njeri told police she went to take a shower in her bathroom and left water in a basin outside her house.

Her daughter Margaret Muthoni was playing outside the house at that time.

The minor reportedly slid and fell into the basin with water before  drowning.

Njeri told police she walked out of the bathroom and later dressed up before she started to call her daughter, oblivious of what had happened.

She says it was after she walked out of the house that she realised the daughter was unresponsive in the basin full of water.

She rushed there in a bid to rescue her but it was too late, police said.

Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei said preliminary findings had shown the body was lying in the water that was in the basin.

“It is possible the tragedy happened but we are investigating to know more,” he said.

Bungei termed the Wednesday morning incident a tragedy and urged for caution by all who care for children.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

Such accidents are common in homes as police say they have received reports of drowning in basins hence need for caution.

In Kinango, Kwale county, a two-year-old girl died after dropping into an unfinished open pit latrine.

Police said Hadija Ndegwa had walked to the latrine that was filled with rainwater and slid into it.

They said her parents managed to rescue her and took her to Kinango Subcounty Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police later visited the scene and documented it.

The family was handed the body for burial in accordance with Muslim traditions.
