The National Assembly has launched a probe into the financial status of universities and other institutions of higher learning.

They will especially focus on on Egerton University, which closed indefinitely, last year.

The university was unable to carry through with its operations due to financial challenges.

The situation had led to protests by the teaching staff over a number of issues including slashing of salaries.

Njoro MP Charity Chepkwony has asked Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to provide measures that the government is taking to address the financial crisis.

"Could the Cabinet secretary provide the specific measures being undertaken to address the financial crisis in public universities and other institutions of higher learning?" she said.

In a statement tabled before the House, Chepkwony said the CS should also explain why Egerton University continues to delay payments to their staff.

The legislator further urged the CS to state what arrangements are being put in place to ensure the staff are paid salaries without further delay.
