The hostages from the train attack were released over a seven-month period

Nigerian authorities have announced that train services on the Abuja-Kaduna railway line, which were suspended following an attack eight months ago, will resume this month.

Services along the route were suspended after an armed gang attacked a moving passenger train on 28 March.

The gunmen blew up the rail track, forcing the moving train to derail.

They killed at least eight passengers and abducted more than 60 others, sparking national outrage and international condemnation.

The hostages were released piecemeal over a seven-month period with traumatised family members protesting several times to demand the release of their loved ones. The last batch was freed on 5 October.

Transportation Minister Mu’azu Sambo said on Monday that adequate security had been put in place to ensure the safety of passengers.

He did not disclose a specific date for the resumption of the services.

The country continues to battle growing incidents of jihadist and bandit attacks, kidnapping for ransom and separatist agitations.
