Kenyan fishermen have retrieved the body of a Tanzanian fisher who drowned a fortnight ago during a fishing expedition in Lake Victoria.
The body of Wycliffe Omondi was recovered near Migingo Island, Migori.
Omondi came to fish in Kenya and was operating at Sare beach in Suba South constituency, Homa Bay.
The fisher died after sliding into the water.
He was with three of his colleagues.
Strong winds and water waves hit the boat, making him lose balance before he suddenly fell into the lake.
Omondi tried in vain to swim to rescue himself but he sank.
Efforts by his fellow fishermen to rescue him failed to bear fruit.
Suba South Beach management unit chairperson William Onditi said they retrieved Omondi's body after dispatching local divers and fishermen to the area.
“I thank the team for working hard and retrieving the body despite taking more than ten days. The body is in a bad state,” Onditi said on Monday.
He said they are liaising with Omondi's family in Tanzania to come and pick up the body.
Fishermen have been asked to avoid going to the lake during bad weather.
Onditi urged them to ensure they use anchors to stop their boats when there is a storm to avoid accidents.
“Fishermen should always put on life jackets when going into the lake,” he said.
Several people have lost their lives in the lake due to accidents with the majority being fishermen and passengers.
