Senators have approved the formation of the Senate business committee after a lengthy debate on the membership of the powerful panel.

Kenya Kwanza senators lobbied to beat their Azimio counterparts that had put up a spirited fight against the motion.

Some 29 senators voted in favour of the motion against 23 who opposed it.

The powerful committee that slots House business will be chaired by Speaker Amason Kingi while majority leader Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho) will be the vice chairperson.

Majority whip Boni Khalwale (Kakamega) minority leader Steward Madzayo (Kilifi) and minority whip Fatuma Dullo (Isiolo) will also sit on the panel.

Others are Ali Roba (Mandera), Margaret Kamar (nominated), Hillary Sigei (Bomet), Mohamed Faki (Mombasa), Maureen Mutinda (nominated), Ledama Olekina (Narok) and Veronica Maina (nominated)

Azimio members had rejected the inclusion of Senator Roba in the proposed list of members of the committee.

They claimed that Roba whose UDM party signed a post-election agreement with Kenya Kwanza was not seconded to the panel by Azimio where they say he legally belongs.
