Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa takes oath of office on September 15.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa has assured county employees that their jobs are safe under his regime, as long as they do their work.

Barasa was sworn in on Thursday and swiftly dispelled rumours he intended to dismiss staff.

He said his aims to develop a strong workforce that will be key to implementing his development agenda.

He, however, warned that staff who don't deliver, will  face disciplinary procedures or even be sacked.

"I want to assure my staff that I have no intention of sacking them but those who will not deliver on their work will have no room in my administration," Barasa said.

He spoke at his Matungu home where he hosted residents to celebrate his swearing-in ceremony.

Barasa noted that he was inheriting a productive workforce that he will develop further to help him serve adequately and foster development.

"I am a politician and a manager who puts emphasis on details while dealing with my staff so they have no reason to be worried but focus on their work," he said.

New governors assumed office less than a month ago and many have already sent top officials on compulsory leave as they reorganise their governments.

In Embu, Governor Cecily Mbarire sacked top county referral hospital bosses and also sent on leave the county revenue collection chief.

In Homa Bay, Gladys Wanga has reshuffled chief officers and sent home some senior officials.

Kilifi's Gideon Mung'aro has also fired half of the county executive committee members.

These among many others have left county workers anxious as new governors take charge.

The new Kakamega county chief said he will tarmac the Harambee- Khaunga- Malaha road for easy transport.

He added that Matungu hospital will be upgraded to a Level Four to provide specialised medical services to residents who are forced to travel long distances to seek such services.

The governor also put cartels on notice, saying they have frustrated smooth operation at the county referral hospital, something he will not entertain,

"I am aware that cartels have suffocated the county referral hospital thereby denying patients quality medical services. I want to warn them that I will direct all my arsenal towards them," he said

Barasa said he will give priority to the revival of Mumias Sugar Company which he noted was the main source of income for the majority of residents.

"I am going to involve all stakeholders in the sector to ensure the smooth revival of the mill devoid of any obstacles like the ones being experienced now," he said.

The governor thanked residents for their support adding that their support during the polls was a clear indication that charity begins at home.
